Eight Point Three Summit
What does effective philanthropy look like in a world defined by increasing complexity and accelerating change?
This was one of the questions that brought together leaders from across philanthropy, technology and civil society at Eight Point Three, a new initiative seeking to rethink how capital, collaboration and innovation can work together to address the challenges facing all 8.3 billion people on our planet.
Representing the Trust at the gathering was an opportunity not simply to share experiences, but to listen, learn and reflect.
One theme emerged repeatedly: the world is not short of ideas, talent or resources. What is often lacking is coordination. The challenges we face – from health and education to climate and inequality – do not exist in isolation, and neither can the solutions.
The conversations highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional boundaries. Philanthropy today is increasingly about partnership: between sectors, between generations and between disciplines. It requires humility, curiosity and a willingness to embrace new approaches.
Technology, too, featured prominently. Not as an answer in itself, but as a tool that, when thoughtfully applied, can help scale solutions and accelerate progress. Equally important was the recognition that trust remains fundamental. Lasting impact depends not only on innovation, but on accountability, transparency and genuine collaboration with the communities philanthropy exists to serve.
As the world evolves, so too must philanthropy. And that, perhaps, is the greatest opportunity of all.
