Celebrating 125 Years of Cancer Research UK

How does Cancer Research UK celebrate its 125th anniversary?

With a reception at St James’s Palace, hosted by Their Majesties The King and Queen, attended by The Princess of Wales, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and, most importantly, the researchers, clinicians, supporters, volunteers and scientists whose dedication continues to drive progress in cancer research.

Representatives of the Kamini and Vindi Banga Family Trust were honoured to attend the evening alongside fellow supporters and advocates of Cancer Research UK’s mission. A particularly memorable moment came when King Charles greeted Kamini Banga with the words, “You are the poet” – a sentiment echoed by the Duchess of Gloucester – making the occasion all the more special.

Yet what stood out most was not the setting, but the shared purpose.

Today, one in two people will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. Behind every statistic lies a patient, a family and a community whose lives are touched by the disease. For many, including cancer survivors within our own extended community, the impact of research is deeply personal.

Over the last 125 years, Cancer Research UK has helped transform our understanding of cancer and improve prevention, detection and treatment. Its work, carried out in collaboration with research teams around the world, continues to offer hope to millions.

The evening served as a powerful reminder that progress is a collective endeavour. It depends on the curiosity of scientists, the commitment of clinicians, the courage of patients and the generosity of supporters.

At the Trust, we are proud to support Cancer Research UK and the extraordinary work it undertakes. We believe that no contribution is too small, and that meaningful change is only possible when individuals, organisations and communities come together in pursuit of a common goal.

After 125 years of progress, there is much to celebrate, and even more reason to look to the future with hope. If you want to support cancer research, please get in touch with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) or through the trust: https://kvbangatrust.org/contact-us
